The other day, the final of the Wills Cricket Trophy was played at the Eden Gardens between Bengal and Mumbai. The Mumbai team won the toss and elected to bat first. Mankad and Arora opened their innings. It was a sensational start. Amitabha bowled Mankad with his very first delivery. Encouraged by this success, Ranjan also took a wicket in his third over. The score was then 10 for 2 wickets. The Mumbai team, however, reached 50 in 18 overs. Patel and Madhukar steadied the innings and took the score to 120 for 6 in 40 overs. Mumbai was all out for 148 runs scored in 45 overs. The Bengal team started cautiously and ran up to 50 for 1 in 12 overs. Then they lost 3 quick wickets. With the score at 79 for 4 in 20 overs, Gopal, Bengal's captain, came out to bat. He cut, drove, pulled and hooked the Mumbai bowlers mercilessly. With the score at 138 for 6, Gopal was run out. Still Bengal managed to win the match comfortably with 3 wickets in hand and 6 overs to spare. Cheered by the home crowd, Bengal team batted, bowled and fielded magnificently. Thus, Bengal team was the deserving winner.
