A Fire

On Monday last a fire broke out in our village. While passing by a stack of hay, a young man carelessly threw away a matchstick after lighting his cigarette. It fell on the stack, which at once caught fire. The young man had already left the place, and there was no other person there at that time. So the stack began to burn unnoticed until the fire spread to a thatched shed near by. It was then that some people came to know of it. A hue and cry was raised which brought a large number of men to the spot. Some began to pour water upon the burning stack and shed. Some got on top of the nearby sheds in order to prevent the fire from spreading. The united efforts of all succeeded in putting out the fire in about half an hour. But the shed and the stack were completely destroyed. The incident has been a lesson to the young man who was the cause of it. He has volunteered to make good the loss.
