The Sarba Siksha Abhijan (SSA) is a programme of the Government of India for providing elementary education for all. Initiated in 2001, it aims at bringing every child of the age group of 6-14 to school-the first five years in a primary school and the next three years in an elementary school-to achieve the goal of universalization of elementary education to a satisfactory quality by 2010. Cost shared by the central and the state governments, the programme seeks to open new schools, strengthen existing schools through provision of new class rooms, more teachers, and special grants for books. It has a special focus on girls' education and children with special needs. Providing computer education to bridge the digital divide, revision of syllabus and examination system and introduction of mid-day meal are some of its other features. The programme has already shown encouraging results. Students are now quite eager to continue studies, dropouts have been arrested and the number of students in schools are on the increase.
