Population explosion is one of the most talked about topics of the world these days. The present world population is estimated at 7 billion. By the year 2050, it will be nearly 11 billion. The explosion in human population is partly due to improvement in medical science and increase in food production-resulting in decline of mortality rate. If this present growth rate continues, it would lead to invasion of agricultural land and forests for construction of new townships. This will result in lesser food production and ecological disturbances. Energy crisis, unemployment problem, economic problem, educational problem, housing problem-all would become still more acute. While in some western countries the growth rate is hardly 0.3% per year, in the developing and under developed countries it is nearly 3% annually on an average. In our country also, where the growth rate is around 2.5% per year, extensive family planning measures have already been undertaken through mass education, extensive campaign and making available family planning devices to the people at large. In the world forum even some creative options like extra-terrestrial settlement are also being thought of. Population explosion if not checked immediately would corrode' the foundation of the present day socio-economic structure. So all countries of the world must fight unitedly to meet the crisis threatening our survival.
